There’s not much to Smiley Face to recommend it over any other moderately amusing stoner comedy. Araki’s Los Angeles is a carnival world—candy-hued and dismally seedy—that harbors a vague contempt for potheads, less hallucinatory than harsh. The only non-forgettable element here is Anna Faris, whose blissed-out mugging is undistinguished, but nonetheless enjoyable. Perhaps she’s just so damn cute that, like John Krasinki’s Brevin, I kind of fell in love. Faris calls to mind a cherub-faced Uma Thurman in her most overstated comedic moments, which was enough to keep my attention for ninety minutes.
