Watching this movie on DVD, I’m struck again by how good Affleck’s directorial debut is. In the commentary, he says he wanted reality in the spaces of the movie, not a pretentious, cleaned-up version. His vision isn’t to show us a world that only exists in the movies, but rather a world as it is, for better or worse. Affleck makes every person, of every class, race, and physical type look oddly beautiful. It’s a breath of fresh air. And every time Patrick makes the right decision in the end, I cheer and hope I would have done the same.
