I saw this as a part of the Moolah Theater’s Midnight Movies series. It was great to watch with a crowd. Everyone cheered when Jareth first appears, people were singing; it was crazy fun. The theater did it right, too: they kept the original movie trailers intact before the feature (Big Trouble in Little China and Willow, for those wondering), and did some movie trivia beforehand. (I won a Labyrinth poster!) Bottom line, this isn’t great cinema, but it is a lovely movie to watch and remember a time when kids movies were a little darker, puppetry still ruled in fantasy films, and when pop stars like Bowie could do a movie like this and still have a viable career. Gotta love the 80’s.
