Five months later, I finally revisited one of the best films of 2008 so far, if not the best. My initial impressions hold up remarkably well. The scenes in the third act featuring Otilia running through underlit alleyways are definitely the weakest component. And on a second viewing the film naturally loses some of its tension. And still. Damn if this isn’t cinematic drama at its finest: intense, humane, and layered. They way that Anamaria Marinca’s big brown eyes utterly control the birthday dinner scene gave me chills all over again.
