Thanks for the shout-out, Andrew. Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this...I've been super busy lately with all kinds of stuff (who would have thought that marriage would take away from blog reading? Haha.), but I just wanted to hop on here real quick and assure you that I did read this marathon essay (which is astounding in its awesomeness) and appreciate you sandwiching me between such esteemed writers.

I think I'm all talked out on this film (today I've made two stops, here and Coleman's Corner in Cinema, to talk about the film, which has been the first time in a week or so), but I want to assure you that your hard (and amazing) work wasn't overlooked by this blogger.

I will certainly keep this in the back of my mind when I talk about the film at the end of the year. Great stuff, Andrew.

Thanks for stopping by, Sam. I have to tip my hat to anyone who can slog through an essay on a film they didn't like! :)

The only other blogger who is "Nay" on IB that springs to mind is Rick Olson at Coosa Creek Cinema, who isn't buying the hype either.

Andrew, thanks very much for the shout-out here! I am assuming I am only one in this group (and I am honored to place in the company of such talented people) who was not a fan of the film. I know Chuck Bowen like it quite a bit, but I haven't yet read the others.

You have really taken your study of the film a step further here, and as always your a fecund, ever-observant and analytically-challenging read. The problem in my case however, is I'm not sufficiently fascinated by the film, and found it long-winded and gruesomely sadistic, with some other passages that seemed overwritten. I'll admit the farm house segment at the outset was excellent.

Your Dinae Krueger discussion is excellent by the way.

  But when you say this:

"He coaxes us to whoop with delight as Nazis are machine-gunned and roasted alive, even as he presents us with a Nazi audience…whooping with delight as Allied soldiers are picked off like rabbits on screen at the Nation’s Pride premiere. It’s hard not to feel a little sting at the comparison..."

well, I must say I quite concur.
